Trump admin imposes new travel restrictions on Chinese Communist Party members: Reports

President Donald Trump has made it more difficult for members of the Chinese Communist Party to travel to the United States.

Under the Trump administration’s new policy, travel visas for party members and their families are limited to just one month, according to media reports.

“Nefarious activities”

According to The New York Times, the new policy requires Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members to enter America within a month of receiving their visas, and they are limited to a single entry. No current visas will be revoked by the policy.

“Previously, party members, like other Chinese citizens, could obtain visitor visas for the United States that were valid for up to 10 years,” the Times reported. “Travel visas for party members will also be limited to a single entry rather than multiple entries as was possible before, according to two people familiar with the changes.”

Trump has taken a tough stance on China throughout his tenure as president, enacting a number of sanctions against Chinese entities in response to surveillance and other national security threats, as well as China’s brutal treatment of its Muslim minority Uighur population and pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

The travel restrictions are Trump’s latest effort to counter what the State Department called the communist regime’s “malign influence” in America through “propaganda, economic coercion, and other nefarious activities,” as Reuters reports.

“For decades we allowed the CCP free and unfettered access to U.S. institutions and businesses while these same privileges were never extended freely to U.S. citizens in China,” a State Department spokesman told The New York Times.

“Abnormal mindset”

President Trump has also slammed China’s communist regime for covering up the early days of the coronavirus outbreak, as well as for trade practices that Trump has said came to America’s detriment.

His latest restrictions come as news outlets have declared Democratic nominee Joe Biden the next president of the United States. Trump has slammed Biden as weak on China, a country that America’s top spy, Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, recently described as the “greatest threat” facing the U.S. since World War II, as Breitbart reported.

The president has meanwhile kept up the pressure on China, including by banning American investment in companies linked with the nation’s military just weeks ago.

For its part, China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed Trump’s latest move.

“We hope people in the United States will adopt a common rational view toward China and give up their hatred and abnormal mindset toward the Communist Party,” they said, The New York Times reported.
