In a tweet last weekend, media-declared Vice President-elect Kamala Harris expressed support for “[s]mall businesses, especially Black and minority-owned businesses,” and said she and Joe Biden would work hard to “get them the support they need” to “survive the effects of coronavirus this winter.”
But as journalist Stacey Lennox exposed in a Monday column for PJ Media, Harris hasn’t been practicing what she preached. Despite promising assistance to small businesses, the California senator has had no problem helping those who sought to burn them down.
In July, Lennox wrote, Harris called on her Twitter followers to support the Minnesota Freedom Fund, an organization dedicated to posting bail “for those protesting on the ground” in the wake of the death of 46-year-old George Floyd in Minneapolis.
But those “protests” frequently devolved into violent riots, with terrible consequences for local business owners.
“Burned to the ground”
Lennox cited a report from Minneapolis’ Star Tribune that highlighted the severity of the destruction. “More than 500 shops and restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul have reported damage when protests on five nights turned violent over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police,” the Tribune reported.
“Dozens of properties burned to the ground,” the report added. “Owners and insurance experts estimate the costs of the damage could exceed $500 million,” a figure “[t]hat would make the Twin Cities riots the second-costliest civil disturbance in U.S. history, trailing only those in Los Angeles in 1992, which were also sparked by racial tensions with police and had $1.4 billion in damages in today’s dollars,” the Tribune said.
Further, according to Lennox, Harris said in an interview with left-wing late-night host Stephen Colbert that she not only expected the protests to continue, but in fact, they “should not” stop.
“This is a movement,” the Democrat said. “They’re not going to stop. Everyone beware.”
Relief held hostage
Of course, backing rioters isn’t the only way Harris has moved to hurt entrepreneurs, as Lennox revealed. The VP-to-be also joined Senate Democrats in blocking a COVID-19 relief package earlier this year that would have provided much-needed help for business owners, according to the New York Post.
Harris opposed the measure, which would have extended the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), as part of a ploy to force Republicans into embracing the Democrat-sponsored HEROES Act. Passed in the House, the HEROES Act is a far more expensive package that Republicans say includes funding for left-wing pet projects that have little to do with the coronavirus.
If Democrats like Harris want Americans to believe they care about small family businesses, they certainly aren’t doing much to show it.
“So, cool story Kamala,” Lennox concluded in her column Monday. “Not buying it.”
