Georgia’s Republican secretary of state has categorically dismissed numerous allegations of voter fraud in his state in the 2020 elections. Now, however, Brad Raffensperger appears to be changing his tune.
Bucking the secretary’s previous skepticism on the topic of election improprieties, Raffensperger’s office revealed at a Monday presser that they have launched investigations into no less than 250 “credible claims” of voter fraud, the Associated Press reported. Still, the AP notes, “nothing so far seems likely to change the outcome of the election.”
As it stands, Democrat Joe Biden has bested Trump in the Peach State by a slim margin of around 12,000 votes, the AP reported separately. With lawsuits across the country, the president and his team are hoping to flip the scales back in his favor.
“Credible claims”
But according to Raffensperger, Georgia likely won’t be the state that changes things for Trump.
“There are those who are exploiting the emotions of many Trump supporters with fantastic claims, half-truths, misinformation and, frankly, they’re misleading the president as well, apparently,” Raffensperger said at the Monday press conference, according to the AP.
However, Raffensperger’s office is looking into hundreds of “credible claims of illegal voting and violation of state election law,” he said, according to The Daily Wire.
“There are currently over 250 open cases from 2020 and we have 23 investigators to follow up on that,” the secretary said Monday. “Some of these include, a charge Gwinnett County that absentee ballots outnumber absentee envelopes. This is the kind of specific charge that our office can investigate and ascertain the truth.”
Other charges being investigated in Georgia include allegations of dead people voting as well as “double voters and non-resident voters,” Raffensperger said, according to The Daily Wire.
“I’m not fighting for me”
They are claims that Trump’s campaign has made elsewhere, including in Wisconsin, where the president’s team says more than 200,000 ballots may have been cast illegally, according to the AP. They’re hoping to take the case all the way to the state Supreme Court.
Like Secretary Raffensperger, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) has said Trump’s claims of fraud in his state are “without merit,” the AP reports, and a spokesperson for Biden called them “completely baseless.”
But that’s not the view the president is taking — and even with just weeks to go until Inauguration Day, he’s keeping up the fight.
