Democrats have spent much of the year since the 2020 presidential election pushing for so-called voter rights bills that target restrictions including ID requirements.
The U.S. Supreme Court is now expected to weigh in on one such dispute originating out of North Carolina.
Justices set to hear arguments
According to reports, the case hinges on whether Republicans can defend the state law, which they argue is not being upheld by the state’s Democratic attorney general.
The North Carolina Conference of the NAACP claims that the law is inherently racist and has maintained that position since it was enacted in 2018.
A Supreme Court ruling in Berger v. North Carolina Conference of the NAACP is expected next summer.
Progressive politicians and pundits have generally opposed GOP-backed restrictions as a form of “voter suppression,” or, as President Joe Biden called them, “Jim Crow on steroids.”
Despite such rhetoric being parroted by many mainstream media outlets, surveys indicate that most Americans actually support voter ID laws.
Democrats continue partisan pursuit
Some critics of the Democratic Party’s position say that it is merely an effort to further damage the integrity of American elections after a presidential race that many Americans believe was tainted by fraud and irregularities.
Of course, much of the media has completely denounced any concerns about the fairness of the election even as Democrats call for an extension of the mail-in voting system put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A ballot proposal in New York to allow no-excuse mail-in voting was rejected, however, and a Democratic-backed effort to pass an election reform agenda through Congress has faced significant hurdles. Nevertheless, many on the left are still fighting for the cause, including by demanding an end to the Senate filibuster to allow Democrats to ram through their partisan proposals.
The party’s apparent desperation to achieve its goal comes as its leaders suffer sagging approval ratings and the upcoming midterm elections shape up to provide Republicans with massive wins.
To most rational Americans, presenting identification before casting a ballot is not a particularly controversial concept. Without reliable elections, America will never be able to restore trust in its institutions.
