Mother shot to death in same Chicago location where son was fatally shot days earlier

An Illinois mother with six children was shot to death on Wednesday in the same Chicago location where her 14-year-old son was gunned down just a few days earlier, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Delisa Tucker was going to the scene of her son Kevin Tinker’s fatal shooting down the street from their home in Roseland to light a candle in the early morning hours when she was also fatally shot, the outlet reported.

Tucker had already lost a brother to gun violence two years prior, and her six-year-old daughter was almost killed in the same way as well.

“It’s just sad that this whole family, basically, to be killed over time,” Pastor Donovan Price, who consoled Tucker at a vigil for her son earlier in the week, said. “I’m devastated.”

Just starting

Police don’t know whether Tucker and her son’s shootings are connected, and no one is in custody for either one of the shootings. Those who knew her said that she and her young son were innocent bystanders, and not involved in criminal activity.

“They were not gang-banging,” a close friend who wanted to remain anonymous said. “Kevin was a quiet boy. He was just starting to get out of his shell.”

There have been at least 26 fatal shootings in their neighborhood this year, according to the New York Post.

At the vigil for Tinker on Sunday night, Tucker reportedly cried out, “Why did you have to take Kevin? You should have taken me.”

Part of a pattern

Chicago has some of the highest levels of violent shootings across the entire country. On a typical weekend, dozens of people are shot and a handful of them die as a result of their injuries.

While Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) has repeatedly tried to blame the raging gun violence on the need for more gun control, others have pointed out that gang and drug activity fuels the shootings.

Police Superintendent Larry Brown said in 2020 that there were 117,000 gang members in the once-great Midwestern city, and added that there are “several hundred gang conflicts every day in Chicago. Every day.”

With police in the area embarrassingly outnumbered by gangbanging thugs, there are plenty of opportunities for gangs to kill and injure each other as well as a number of innocent bystanders.
