Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has attracted praise from many conservatives over his approach to COVID-19 restrictions and mandates.
Even as many Democratic-led states are experiencing a surge in cases, recent reports show Florida is posting some of the lowest rates in the country.
Cases rise in numerous states
As of Friday, the state reported a daily average of 1,393 infections, which equates to about six out of every 100,000 residents and registers as the lowest per capita rate in America.
Furthermore, Florida has seen a decrease of two percentage points over the past two weeks.
Elsewhere across the nation, however, the news is not as positive. A number of blue states, in fact, are currently seeing a startling rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.
Michigan, for example, has seen an average of 8,457 cases per day, or about 85 per 100,000 residents. That state has seen a whopping 88% increase in just the past two weeks.
Additionally, Pennsylvania is seeing about 6,261 new cases each day, or roughly 49 cases per 100,000 residents. That marks a 40% increase over the course of two weeks.
“Learn from Florida’s experience”
Other states, including New York, are also seeing their COVID-19 numbers trend in the wrong direction, which is sure to be a bitter pill for Democrats to swallow after portraying the response of DeSantis and other Republican leaders as irresponsible.
Whereas Democrats have pushed for vaccine mandates, lockdowns, and other restrictions, the Florida governor has generally rejected such efforts despite pushback from the mainstream media and progressive politicians.
Now, his state is faring better than many Democratic-led states, as his press secretary explained in a statement this week.
“It just shows once again the success of Governor DeSantis’s science-based and data-based policies,” Christina Pushaw said. “He’s always made decisions based on the data and that continued even during the Delta surge this summer what he realized would help was not mask mandates in school or lockdowns but provide treatment that actually works.
As for the blue states seeing their infection rates climb, she shared her hope that they would “learn from Florida’s experience” and eschew harsh restrictions like lockdowns, which have proven “time and time again” to not be an effective mitigation measure.
