Vice President Kamala Harris raised some eyebrows Friday, taking a private, unexplained trip to Palm Springs, California.
It was unclear what exactly Harris, who represented California in the Senate before assuming the vice presidency, was doing in Palm Springs.
“The White House and Ms. Harris‘ office wouldn’t give a reason for the one-night trip, which began on Friday afternoon with her departure from Joint Base Andrews near Washington,” The Washington Times reported, adding that “[r]eporters were not allowed to watch her departure.”
The White House issued a brief statement on the matter, but did not provide very many details.
“The vice president will remain overnight in Palm Springs and return to Washington, D.C., on Saturday,” the White House said.

According to the Palm Springs Desert Sun, Harris landed in Palm Springs at roughly 7 p.m. local time, and once she disembarked from the plane, drivers in the area had to stop to allow her motorcade to pass.
The Desert Sun reported Friday that Harris “appears unlikely to meet with local Democrats during her visit. Elle Kurpiewski, political director of the Democratic Headquarters of the Desert, said nobody she knows was aware of the vice president’s scheduled visit.”
Palm Springs Mayor Christy Gilbert Holstege did tweet Saturday, “Welcome to Palm Springs, Madam Vice President! ”

Harris’ secretive trip came as the Biden administration was trying to convince congressional lawmakers to pass a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill and a $3.5 trillion measure that allocates massive amounts of funding for social and environmental programs.
Harris could potentially play a role in the passage of both bills. Republicans and Democrats each control 50 seats in the Senate, but as vice president, Harris could cast the tie-breaking vote.
Despite leaving the nation’s capital on Friday, Harris returned Saturday and was seen taking a power walk with her husband, Doug Emhoff, in Washington on Sunday, according to the New York Post.
