Americans and allies around the world were appalled over last week’s terror attack that left 13 U.S. service members dead near the Kabul international airport in Afghanistan.
When House Republicans held a moment of silence for those killed in the suicide bombing, however, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was apparently not on board.
“Don’t you think our military deserves better?”
According to Breitbart, Pelosi gaveled down the request of multiple GOP members to honor the fallen troops. Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) later asserted that the speaker “did not acknowledge” their motion and simply “closed the House down.”
In a statement to The Floridian, Mast explained that the session began with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence, after which the GOP lawmakers “asked to be recognized to read names and bring up Afghanistan legislation.”
Rep. Carlos A. Gimenez (R-FL) accused Pelosi of attempting to minimize the tragedy in Kabul.
“How badly do Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats want to cover up this Afghanistan debacle?” he asked in a tweet. “They just blocked Members of Congress from reading the names of the service members who sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan last week. Don’t you think our military deserves better?”
In a tweet of his own, Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) declared: “House Democrats just refused to recognize Republican veterans on the House Floor to read the names of our fallen service members in Afghanistan. That’s how far our nation has fallen.”
“We will not leave them behind”
Not only did Pelosi’s move prevent the names from being read, but her party effectively blocked a GOP bill seeking answers about American citizens and military equipment left behind in Afghanistan.
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) introduced legislation that called on the Biden administration to provide an account of how many U.S. weapons are now in Taliban hands as well as the plan for bringing home Americans stranded in that country.
“We will not leave them behind,” asserted House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). “We need a plan to get them out and we need to have that voice tomorrow.”
As of Tuesday morning, however, he acknowledged that Democrats would not permit the bill to move forward.
“Democrats just blocked a vote to require a plan from President Biden to bring Americans home and to account for all the military equipment left behind,” McCarthy tweeted. “Republicans will not stop until every American is home safely.”
