The handful of Republicans in both the House and the Senate who supported the Democrats’ second failed impeachment against former President Donald Trump are still suffering the political ramifications from their choices.
The latest to pay a price for her vote in favor of convicting the former president is Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), who has now been formally censured by a third county-level GOP committee in the state of Maine, Breitbart reported.
The latest censure came from the Kennebec County GOP, following similar censures from the Piscataquis County GOP in April, and the Aroostook County GOP in March, which coincided with the failed attempt by the Maine Republican Party to formally censure the senator.
Voters make frustrations known
News Center Maine reported that the Kennebec County GOP voted 49-18 on Tuesday to “send a clear message” to Sen. Collins that her vote in support of convicting the former president was unacceptable to Republican voters in the county.
The “clear message” to the senator was that the GOP voters in the county were “America First” Republicans who support the former president and his policies over those of the Republican Party establishment, as well as to formalize the hurt, frustration, and betrayal those very voters felt over Collins’ opposition to Trump.
The vote followed an effort by the county party in February to censure Collins over her impeachment vote that narrowly failed passage.
“Self-serving, vindictive and punitive”
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Piscataquis County Republican Committee had similarly voted to censure Sen. Collins, not only for her impeachment vote but also for previous votes she’d cast in recent years, such as her vote in support of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Democratic gun control proposals.
Those same Republicans also took issue with Collins’ decidedly moderate stance, which they alleged was centered on protecting her own political career rather than supporting and serving the wants and needs of her own conservative constituents.
Prior to the Piscataquis censure, the senator had also been formally censured in March by the Aroostook County Republicans, according to Newsweek, over her “purely self-serving, vindictive and punitive” vote to convict Trump in the “illegal” second impeachment trial of his presidency.
They further condemned Collins for having undermined the “conservative and ethical values” held by Republican voters in Aroostook County, as well as the state of Maine as a whole.
Avoids Maine GOP censure
It is worth noting that while Sen. Collins has now been formally censured by three county-level GOP committees, she has managed to avoid the same fate from the Maine Republican Party, thus far, though not for lack of trying.
According to News Center Maine, around the same time in March that the Aroostook County GOP censured Collins, the Maine Republican Party issued a statement of condemnation against the senator’s impeachment vote but had defeated a resolution to formally censure her with a 19-41 vote.
