Although former President Donald Trump has largely remained out of the spotlight since his departure from office earlier this year, it appears as if that’s about to change in a big way.
According to Cleveland’s Fox 8, the former president held a massive, campaign-style rally in Lorain County, Ohio on Saturday night. The event doesn’t appear to be a one-off, as a series of additional rallies have been planned for what some outlets have already dubbed a “revenge tour.”
Trump used his Saturday night speech to sharply criticize his 78-year-old successor, telling his supporters that “Joe Biden is destroying our nation right before our very eyes.”
Pushing fresh candidates
Aside from bashing Biden, Trump also used Saturday night’s rally to endorse former adviser Max Miller, who will be mounting a primary challenge against incumbent GOP Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH).
Gonzalez, who was among the few House Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching Trump for a second time, was accused by the former president of being a “fake Republican” and “not the candidate you want representing the party.”
When it was Miller’s turn to take the stage, he not only went after Gonzalez but also suggested that Trump could be back on the ballot in the 2024 presidential election.
“Come 2024, we’re going to get him elected for the third time,” the congressional hopeful said of the former president, eliciting loud roars of applause and cheers from rally attendees.
GOP incumbent dismisses former Trump adviser as an “errand boy”
Fox 8 quoted a statement from Gonzalez’s office in which they mocked Miller for acting as Trump’s “errand boy” while touting the incumbent Republican lawmaker’s conservative credentials.
“While Max was being an errand boy, fetching the President Diet Cokes and laboring over which music to play at campaign rallies, Anthony Gonzalez has been serving his constituents and focusing on issues that matter to the people of Northeast Ohio,” the statement read.
“Anthony is a proven conservative with a record of strengthening our economy, fighting back against the Chinese Communist Party and its unfair trade practices, serving our veterans and providing the highest level of constituent services,” the statement added.
Gonzalez’s office fired parting shots in the statement’s conclusion, writing, “Max Miller isn’t fit to represent our community in Congress, and the campaign, as it develops, will bear this out.”
With tens of millions of Trump supporters across the country and a conservative base that strongly prefers Trump-backed candidates, Gonzalez’s reelection bid might soon prove to be more difficult than what they’re projecting at the moment.
