‘It has been two weeks’: Lara Trump slams Harris over absence from border amid crisis

It’s been nearly two weeks since President Joe Biden first announced that Kamala Harris would be playing a leading role in his administration’s efforts to resolve the ongoing immigration crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border, and still, the vice president has not made a trip to the border to see the problem for herself. Now, critics are calling her out on it.

In an appearance Saturday on Fox News’ Watters’ World, Lara Trump blasted Harris for being missing-in-action at the border despite an ongoing surge in migration there.

“Where is Vice President Kamala Harris? She needs to get down to the southern border,” Trump said Saturday, according to Fox. “It has been two weeks…since she was tapped for this role.”

“An absolute crisis”

Speaking with guest host Dan Bongino, Trump said that the situation at the border is nothing short of a “crisis,” regardless of how the White House “want[s] to spin it.”

“What we see happening down there is so egregious, so outrageous, it is bad for America, it is bad for the people that are trying to come over our southern border,” she said, according to Fox. “I don’t care how they want to spin it, there is no doubt [what is] happening on our southern border right now…is an absolute crisis.”

The daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump went on to contrast her father-in-law’s handling of the early days of the coronavirus pandemic with his successor’s handling of the border crisis, which has been less than effective, to say the least.

“You saw President Donald Trump task Vice President Mike Pence with heading up Operation Warp Speed, and he jumped in with both feet,” she said, according to Fox. “You heard from him constantly. You heard from the White House constantly. They were holding press conferences as often as possible to keep the American people informed.”

By contrast, Lara Trump said President Biden’s administration has been “the least transparent we have ever seen in the White House.”

According to her, part of the blame for the lack of transparency lies with the mainstream media, which she said “coddled Joe Biden the entire campaign, and allowed him to get to this spot, and now they don’t want to mess anything up.”

“No laughing matter”

As for whether — and when — Harris is planning a trip to the border, the answer remains unclear — and she hasn’t exactly been forthcoming in her responses to reporters who are asking the question.

In an incident that has since gone viral, Harris broke out laughing after being pressed by a journalist on if she plans to make the trip. “Not today,” the vice president declared before launching into what some commenters described as a cackle. “But I have before and I’m sure I will again.”

The moment drew criticism from Republicans like Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who told Fox News that the situation is “no laughing matter.”
