A fatal attack on U.S. Capitol Police on Friday seemed to disappear from the headlines nearly as soon as it broke. Now, one social media company is apparently looking to follow the trend.
According to The Daily Wire, Facebook was quick to delete the account of 25-year-old Noah Green, the suspect in the recent killing of a Capitol Police officer who was shot dead after ramming a pair of officers with a car and subsequently brandishing a knife.
While the deletion of Green’s profile may have made it more difficult to identify the assailant, it only seemed to confirm that he was indeed the primary suspect, at least in the eyes of journalists.
Another Capitol attack
NBC News reported Friday afternoon that Green had driven a vehicle directly into a Capitol Police checkpoint, killing one officer and severely wounding another, before jumping out of the vehicle and “lunging” toward law enforcement officials with a large knife.
The Indiana man was shot by police and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Just hours later, the acting chief of the D.C. Metro Police, Robert Contee, summarily declared that the fatal attack “does not appear to be terrorism-related,” as NBC noted.
Facebook account scrubbed
While Green’s Facebook was only live for roughly 30 minutes after his identity was first revealed by an MSNBC reporter, the page nonetheless provided valuable information about the suspect’s ties to the Nation of Islam and its controversial leader, Louis Farrakhan.
According to The Daily Wire, Green wrote in one since-deleted Facebook post that as of late, his “faith” is all he’s had.
“I’ve been faced with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, and diminution of fruit,” the 25-year-old said. “My faith is one of the only things that has been able to carry me through these times and my faith is centered on the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan as Jesus, the Messiah, the final divine reminder in our midst.”
Platform issues statement
Facebook, for its part, cited its so-called “Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policy” in a statement to The Daily Wire about the deletion.
“We have designated the incident under our Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policy, which means we have removed the suspect’s accounts from Facebook and Instagram, and are removing any content that praises, supports, or represents the attack or the suspect,” the platform said. “We are in contact with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation.”
Facebook went on: “After this horrific event, our thoughts are with the Capitol Police and their loved ones.
