Two Democrat congressmen look to bring mail-in voting to the national scene

Congressional Democrats are trying to make sure that vote-by-mail is here to stay.

Breitbart reports that Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) introduced a bill to Congress this week that looks to allow mail-in voting in all federal elections going forward.

The bill

Breitbart, in its report, focuses on several of the bill’s provisions.

One of these provisions would require ballots to be mailed to all registered voters weeks before election day. The bill, elsewhere, calls for automatic voter registration meaning that anyone who provides identification to their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles would automatically be registered to vote.

Another provision talks about submitting the ballots. It would allow voters to either return their ballots through the mail or to drop their ballots off at drop-off sites.

And, the bill states that Americans will still have the option to vote at the polls if they would prefer that over voting by mail.

The argument

According to Wyden, this type of bill is necessary for America to “make real progress.”

“To make real progress, our country needs a government that represents all Americans,” Wyden tweeted. “Oregonians know that voting at home is a time-tested, secure, and accessible way to vote. It’s high time the rest of the country had the chance to vote the way we do.”

Wyden and Blumenauer, of course, both represent Oregon, and their goal with this bill is to bring Oregon-style mail-in voting to the national scene. They argue that the bill is necessary to put an end to voter suppression and that the 2020 elections proved that this can be accomplished by way of mail-in voting.

A more realistic take

Wyden and Blumenauer clearly see the 2020 election as a success, and for the Democrats, it was, in the sense that they won.

But, peace in America depends upon the perception that elections are fair, and mail-in voting did little to promote that perception. Instead, even now, months after the 2020 election, a large part of our country still has doubts about whether or not fraud occurred in the election, particularly the presidential election.

If mail-in voting is going to be the way of the future, then there needs to be substantially more safeguards than are offered in this bill to ensure that the process is legitimate.
