Sen. Graham is working with the Democrats on an amnesty deal

Breitbart reports that Senate Democrats are targeting Senate Republicans whom they think they can get to support an amnesty deal.

The main target here appears to be Sen. Linsey Graham (R-SC). Graham had indicated in November of 2020 that he would be willing to work with the Democrats on a deal to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants currently living in America.

“But you’ll also see me trying to find common ground that would benefit all of us and a good place to start, I think, would be the debt and infrastructure and immigration,” Graham said to the Senate Republican caucus at the time.

Now, it appears that Graham is doing just what he said he would do.

It’s true

The Hill reports that Graham has been working with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) on a piece of legislation that is being called the DREAM Act. This bill is expected to be introduced to the Senate this week.

The specifics of the bill have yet to be released to the public, but it is said that it will resemble a previous Dream Act bill that Graham and Durbin have introduced to Congress in the past.

According to The Hill, the previous version of the bill would have provided “permanent residency, and eventual citizenship, to immigrants brought into the country as children who meet education or work requirements.”

Breitbart, however, also notes that previous efforts from Graham and Durbin included the unpopular Gang of Eight amnesty plan, which likely cost Democrats politically.

Looking ahead

What appears to be clear is that the amnesty bill supported by President Joe Biden is considered by Congress as a nonstarter. Biden’s bill would essentially provide amnesty to all 11 to 22 million illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States.

Both Graham and Durbin have indicated that they see the bill they are about to introduce as a starting point for future congressional negotiations regarding amnesty.

Congress has struggled to get an amnesty deal passed for years nows with the most recent serious attempt coming in 2018. All attempts so far have failed, and there is no indication that this one will be any different.

Even though the Democrats control the presidency, the House, and the Senate, they would still need ten Senate Republicans to overcome the Senate filibuster, and that appears to be too big of an ask. Breitbart reports that other Republican targets, besides Graham, include Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Rick Scott (R-FL). All of them have indicated a willingness to agree to an amnesty deal.
