Biden increases pressure on Chief Justice Roberts with launch of court reform commission

One of Donald Trump’s greatest achievements during his presidency was his appointment of three constitutionalist justices to the Supreme Court of the United States. Those appointments, however, put Chief Justice John Roberts in a difficult place as one of the more centrist judges on the bench.

Roberts has been targeted by the newly-minted President Joe Biden as the key to moderating the conservative influence on the court, and the Daily Caller’s Ellie Gardey noted on Saturday that Biden’s new commission to study Supreme Court “reform” is a “warning shot” to Roberts to keep those Trump justices in line.

SCOTUS “reform”

Despite months of obfuscating on questions of whether he supported the leftist notion of packing the Supreme Court, Joe Biden announced this week that he’ll dedicate resources to exploring methods of SCOTUS reform.

“The President remains committed to an expert study of the role and debate over reform of the court and will have more to say in the coming weeks,” a White House official told Fox News on Thursday.

Biden’s commission of scholars has 180 days to come up with a solution for the “out of whack” court system.

Gardey wrote that Biden’s commission is “a thinly veiled threat to Chief Justice John Roberts in the form of a new commission that will study Supreme Court reform.”

“The threat is clear: if Roberts doesn’t limit the court’s conservative influence on key issues like abortion, gun rights and immigration, Democrats will pack the court,” Gardey explained.

Roberts has tended towards the moderate side of most hot-button issues, but with liberal justices now in the minority, political pressure for him to temper the constitutional influence is rising.

Veiled language

As Gardey pointed out, Biden’s court reform commission is billed as a bipartisan initiative to generally study court reform, keeping the proposal from appearing as an outright threat to pack the courts.

But the intention is clear: “In other words, “Nice court ya got there, it would be a shame if something happened to it,” Gardey snarked.

Biden has wisely refused to come out in support of or in opposition to the notion of expanding the number of Supreme Court judges in order to play both sides of the aisle until enough support is garnered for the leftist plot.

“The reality is that Biden’s commission is a clean handed way to advance the court-packing plot, an intimidation technique to erode the separation of powers between the judicial and executive branches in order to advance Democratic political power,” Gardey concluded. “So far, the Democratic threat of court-packing is working, and brilliantly so.”
