Pelosi smears Republican colleagues as she calls for more security: ‘The enemy is within the House’

During a press conference this week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made the shocking claim that additional funding for Capitol security is needed because “the enemy is within the House of Representatives.”

“I do believe, and I have said this all along,” she said, “that we will probably need a supplemental for more security for Members when the enemy is within the House of Representatives, a threat that Members are concerned about, in addition to what is happening outside.”

Pelosi, here, was obviously referring to House Republicans as “the enemy” that is within. But, any doubt about that was dispelled by a subsequent response that she gave to a reporter who asked Pelosi what exactly she meant by “the enemy is within.”

“It means that we have Members of Congress who want to bring guns on the Floor and have threatened violence on other Members of Congress,” Pelosi said. The reporters did not press for further details.

Gabbard’s take

At least one Democrat had the grace to push back on Pelosi’s allegations. Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) is calling for Pelosi to be held accountable — either report any real threats to law enforcement or apologize.

Gabbard, who made a run for the U.S. presidency as a Democrat in 2020 but ultimately had to drop out, made an appearance Friday on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” where she compared Pelosi’s “broad, inflammatory rhetoric” to “throwing a match into the tinderbox.”

Gabbard argued that if there really is a threat from within, then that is an issue for law enforcement.

“If you think there is someone among the Republican caucus plotting the murder of Nancy Pelosi or other members of Congress, that could then bring violence upon those individuals,” Gabbard said. “That’s the issue here. If this is a [criminal threat], let law enforcement deal with it.”

Pelosi “needs to apologize”

Gabbard said, however, that if there is no such threat, then Pelosi is “inciting further division,” and, accordingly ought to apologize.

“This is why it’s so important for Nancy Pelosi — if these accusations are baseless — she needs to apologize — not so much to her colleagues but to the American people who right now, more than ever, need leadership coming from the speaker of the House, who represents all members of Congress and the American people to bring us together,” Gabbard said.

Gabbard made a good point here.

We, however, won’t expect an apology from Pelosi anytime soon.
