In the wake of President Donald Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud in last month’s presidential election, some of his supporters in Georgia have advocated for a boycott of next month’s U.S. Senate runoff races in Georgia.
This week, however, the president is reportedly pushing back against a pair of attorneys who are leading the call for Republicans to sit out the high-stakes elections.
“Fighting for election integrity”
Trump reportedly spoke on the phone with Lin Wood and Sidney Powell in an attempt to urge them not to push a boycott of the Jan. 5 runoff elections.
According to a source close to Trump, the president told both attorneys that he “appreciated them fighting for election integrity” but stressed the importance of Republicans regaining control of the Senate, which hangs in the balance ahead of the Georgia races.
GOP Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler are running for re-election against Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, respectively.
Both Wood and Powell have supported Trump’s claims that the presidential race was stolen, but have garnered criticism for taking the additional step of amplifying calls to sit out the runoffs in response.
At a rally on Wednesday, Wood argued that if Loeffler and Perdue do not adequately address the allegations of voter fraud, “they have not earned your vote,” echoing complaints that the pair of establishment Republicans have not done enough to support the Trump campaign’s post-election challenges.
“Fix it before we’ll do it again”
“Don’t you give it to them,” Wood continued. “Why would you go back and vote in another rigged election for God’s sake? Fix it. You gotta fix it before we’ll do it again.”
Critics argue that the lawyers are needlessly demoralizing Republican voters, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) calling the duo “totally destructive.”
According to an Axios report, Trump further signaled to Powell and Wood the perceived importance of his planned campaign stop in Georgia ahead of the elections.
For its part, Breitbart has reported on Wood’s past, including a long record of donating to Democrats.
As for Powell, Trump’s attorneys recently distanced themselves from her amid growing controversy surrounding her claims that electronic voting machines were manipulated to switch votes from Trump to Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
