Although President Donald Trump made notable gains among Black voters this election season, the overwhelming majority favored Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who has been declared by the mainstream media as the winner of last month’s election.
As the former vice president continues to name individuals to key administration posts, however, many of those supporters in the Black community are reportedly questioning his choices.
“We are here to support this administration”
Biden told his Black supporters that they had “always had [his] back” and that he would “always have [theirs],” but some reluctant voters have made their misgivings known throughout the 2020 campaign season.
The Hill noted that some progressive leaders, including NAACP head Derrick Johnson, are expressing some level of concern over Biden’s commitment to keeping his promise.
Johnson told the presumptive president-elect that the organization is “pleased with” some of his appointments while lamenting the fact that its representatives “have yet to meet with” Biden to discuss important issues.
“And that is concerning because we are here to support this administration in its effort to be successful,” he concluded.
According to Johnson, there are “many very capable competent individuals who are providing insight and bringing to bear some of their knowledge” on Biden’s transition team, but no one “from the civil rights community.”
“We want something for our vote”
In response, Biden transition team spokesperson Cameron French asserted that the former vice president seeks to assemble a “diverse administration that looks like America.”
Both the “campaign and transition” were successful in that regard, he asserted, cautioning observers to hold out on passing judgment on Biden’s emerging Cabinet and inner circle.
“He has announced several historic and diverse White House appointments and cabinet nominees to this point, and his success in finding diverse voices to develop and implement his policy vision to tackle our nation’s toughest challenges will be clear when our full slate of appointees and nominees is complete,” French promised.
Of course, Johnson is not alone in voicing reservations about the progress of Biden’s transition so far, which House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) succinctly panned as “not good.”
Another skeptic is Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, who declared in a letter that her movement helped secure Biden’s victory, demanding: “We want something for our vote. We want to be heard and our agenda to be prioritized.”
