Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away at the age of 87 last week, leaving a vacancy on the nation’s highest court. During a rally this weekend, President Donald Trump gave a major hint as to who he might fill it with.
The president told a crowd of supporters in North Carolina on Saturday night that he was about to conduct a “scientific” poll and then proceeded to ask them to cheer if they wanted a female nominee, the Washington Examiner reported.
After the cheering subsided, Trump declared, “It will be a woman. A very talented, very brilliant woman. We haven’t chosen yet, but we have numerous women on the list.”
In fact, the paper noted that the president had already told reporters earlier in the day that his nominee “would most likely” be a woman.
Will Barrett be the nominee?
Many have suggested that the nominee will be Judge Amy Coney Barrett, someone that Trump described on Saturday as being “very highly respected.”
Known as a devout Catholic, Barrett is the mother of 7 children, including a son and a daughter that she and her husband adopted from Haiti.
The judge’s faith became an issue during her confirmation hearing in 2017 when California Sen. Dianne Feinstein famously complained that “the dogma lives loudly within you. And that’s of concern.”
Another potential name that has been mentioned is that of Judge Allison Jones Rushing, who once interned at the Alliance Defending Freedom and has been a member of the conservative Federalist Society since 2012.
Chuck Schumer: “Nothing is off the table”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has already promised that whoever the president nominates will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate, a fact that has provoked outrage from Democrats.
Politico quoted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as saying on Saturday, “Let me be clear: if Leader McConnell and Senate Republicans move forward with this, then nothing is off the table for next year. Nothing is off the table.”
Others have been more aggressive in their response, with some left-wing Twitter users openly threatening violence in the event that Ginsburg’s replacement is confirmed before the election.
Liberal media personality Reza Aslan tweeted on Friday evening, “If they even TRY to replace RBG we burn the entire f***ing thing down.”
