President Donald Trump just received another big endorsement.
The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), America’s largest police union, announced on Friday that it will be endorsing the Trump-Pence 2020 ticket.
“On behalf of the 355,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, we are proud to unanimously endorse @realDonaldTrump for President of the United States,” the organization tweeted.
A no brainer
There is no question that the two presidential candidates’ positions on law enforcement are going to play a larger-than-usual role this November, given what we have seen following the death of George Floyd.
According to FOP president Patrick Yoes, the organization has chosen to support President Trump because its members know that Trump is for law and order and, thus, police officers.
“Public safety will undoubtedly be a main focus for voters in this year’s election,” Yoes said. “Look at what the national discourse has focused on for the last six months. President Trump has shown time after time that he supports our law enforcement officers and understands the issues our members face every day.”
Yoes added:
During his first four years, President Trump has made it crystal clear that he has our backs. Our members know that he listens to the concerns of our brothers and sisters in uniform and is able to make tough decisions on the issues most important to law enforcement. President Trump is committed to keeping our communities and families safe.
The same, however, cannot be said of the Biden-Harris ticket.
What we know about Biden . . .
. . . is that he is against defunding the police – or at least that he claims to be against defunding the police. Biden, however, is for reforming the police, although what he means by this is unclear.
What also makes Biden’s law enforcement position at best ambiguous is the fact that he has chosen Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) to be his running mate. Harris has proven to be a supporter of the “defund the police” movement, at one point applauding the mayor of Los Angeles for cutting police funding by $150 million.
Given these two platforms, the platforms of Trump and Biden, police officers really do only have one option this November: Trump.
This is why the FOP, and countless other police organizations, have been coming forward in the past months to endorse Trump-Pence 2020 and it is why Trump is going to get huge support from the law enforcement community this general election.
