CNN’s Don Lemon criticizes Pelosi for accusing salon owner of a ‘setup’

Even some on the left are calling out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for her arrogant reaction after she was caught violating local regulations with a recent visit to a San Francisco hair salon.

CNN host Don Lemon chastised Pelosi for blaming the salon owner when she knew she was breaking the rules, saying the speaker should have just admitted to being wrong, The Washington Times reported.

Pelosi’s “Salon-gate”

Fox News was the first media outlet to report on Speaker Pelosi’s visit on Monday to the salon in her district. Leaked surveillance camera footage showed Pelosi, sans face mask, receiving a hair wash and blow-dry inside the hair salon.

The scandal quickly blew up in light of the fact that Pelosi has been adamant in scolding the American people about wearing mask. On top of that, hair salons and many other businesses in the city have been prohibited by strict state and local ordinances since March from providing such services indoors. In fact, it was only on the day after Pelosi’s visit that hair salons could finally begin providing some services in an outdoor setting.

After being exposed for breaking the coronavirus-related rules about face masks and salons, the speaker claimed that she had been “setup” by the owner of the salon.

“I take responsibility for trusting the word of a neighborhood salon that I’ve been to over the years many times,” the most powerful female politician in the U.S. said in a Wednesday press conference, according to the Times. “And that when they said [that] we’re able to accommodate people, one person at a time, and that we can set up that time, I trusted that. As it turns out, it was a setup. So, I take responsibility for falling for a setup.”

Lemon: Pelosi should have known better

Somewhat surprisingly, even CNN’s Lemon took issue with Pelosi’s behavior. Following a brief summation of the story during his Wednesday night show, including a clip of Pelosi’s excuse earlier that day, Lemon said, “So the Speaker of the House is blaming the salon after she didn’t wear a mask indoors. Tonight the salon owner is denying it is a setup.”

“Regardless, this is — this far into the pandemic, the House Speaker should know what is safe and what isn’t. We should all know. It’s our responsibility,” Lemon continued. “Instead of claiming a set-up, it would have been just as easy for the speaker to say, ‘You know what, I messed up. I should have worn a mask indoors.”

If Pelosi can do it, why not everybody else?

Bay Area ABC-affiliate KGO reported that salon owner Erica Kious argued in a tearful press conference that she hadn’t set Pelosi up but merely exposed her actions — feeling “safe and comfortable” without a mask inside the salon — in order to help spur along the stalled reopening process in her city and state.

“The point of releasing this video was to show a woman in a high-risk age group who spends much of her time on TV warning about the dangers of COVID-19, feel safe and comfortable in a San Francisco salon, and can be responsible for being cautious and mindful,” Kious said.

“Why can’t the rest of San Francisco and the rest of America do that too?” she asked.
