Update in the murder case of Gabby Petito: fiance Laundrie’s cause of death revealed

There are new revelations in the case of Gabby Petito, the young woman who was found strangled to death following a cross-country road trip with her fiance, Brian Luaundrie.

Investigators have now revealed that Laundrie, the sole “person of interest” in Petito’s death, committed suicide.

The latest

After weeks of searching for Laundrie, authorities on October 20th, finally found part of his skeletal remains at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Florida. Laundrie’s identity was subsequently confirmed by a comparison of dental records.

The big question that was not answered at the time was how Laundrie died. We now know the answer to this question: Laundrie died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

Steven Bertolino, the attorney representing the Laundrie family, informed his clients of the finding on Tuesday. It comes following a thorough investigation by forensic anthropologists that, according to Fox, included “a complete examination of the recovered skeletal remains, a consultation with a forensic odontologist that confirmed a comparison of dental records, a consultation with a forensic anthropologist, and a comparison of remains by DNA analysis.”

This investigation by forensic anthropologists followed an initial autopsy that turned up inconclusive.

As for where Laundrie got the gun to shoot himself, reports indicate that, although Laundrie’s family turned over their firearms to the FBI in mid-September, one was missing. It has yet to be reported, though, whether this missing gun is the gun that Laundrie used to shoot himself.

Background

Several facts made Laundire a person of interest in Petito’s disappearance and death. First is the fact that Laundrie returned home from the cross-country trip in Petito’s van without Petito.

But, in addition to this, there was an incident that took place in Utah in which police stopped Laundrie and Petito following reports of domestic abuse. Witnesses, specifically, said that they saw a man hitting a woman.

Also, there was an incident at a diner, right before Petito is believed to have been killed, in which Laundrie got into a dispute with staff. Petito ended up apologizing to the staff for his behavior.

Along with Laundrie’s remains, investigators also found a notebook that police said, “may be salvageable.” But, we still do not know what is in the notebook.

Another question that we have been waiting for the answer to is whether Laundrie’s family would be charged for helping their son to evade authorities. Petito’s family attorney, according to Fox, has hinted that charges could be filed against “additional individuals.”
