Former President Donald Trump recently received some good legal news.
According to reports, a former contestant on the Trump-hosted reality series The Apprentice just dropped her defamation lawsuit against the ex-president.
“Totally made-up stuff”
Summer Zervos first filed the suit in 2017, but the alleged underlying incident dated back a decade prior to that.
When Trump was running for president ahead of the 2016 election, Zervos came forward with allegations that he sexually assaulted her by groping and kissing her without consent in a Beverly Hills hotel room in 2007.
For his part, Trump denied the claims and publicly referred to Zervos as a “liar” who spread allegations of “totally made-up stuff” and “fake news.”
It was those comments, not the alleged sexual assault, that led his accuser to file a defamation suit. While that suit has been playing out for years, it has now come to an end.
Zervos has reportedly dropped her claim against Trump, with her attorneys declaring that “after five years, Ms. Zervos no longer wishes to litigate against the defendant and has secured the right to speak freely about her experience.”
“Our client did nothing wrong”
As a result of her decision, the Manhattan Supreme Court has discontinued and dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning that she cannot try to file the same suit in another New York court at some point in the future. The court also ruled that each party in the case will be responsible for its own costs.
Although Zervos is no longer pursuing legal action against the former president, her attorneys assert that she “stands by the allegations in her complaint and has accepted no compensation.”
Of course, that leaves nagging questions about why she chose to drop the suit now.
Trump attorney Alina Habba attempted to tackle that issue in a statement, asserting: “Zervos had no choice but to do so as the facts unearthed in this matter make it abundantly clear that our client did nothing wrong.”
The former president also weighed in on the recent development, calling it “sad when things like this can happen” and stressing the importance of fighting “for truth and justice.”
