‘They got him’: Rapper Young Dolph fatally shot outside Tennessee bakery

There has been a serious spike in violent crime across the U.S. over the last several years, with FBI figures showing that homicide rates rose by as much as 30% in 2020, the largest ever jump in a single year, according to the Associated Press.

The tragedies continued this week with the death of Young Dolph, a 36-year-old rap star who was fatally shot outside of a bakery in Memphis, Tennessee, according to Fox News.

Fox said the rapper, whose real name was Adolph Robert Thornton, Jr., died Thursday afternoon in an apparent ambush.

“He pulled his Lamborghini up to the shop and they got him, man. They got him,” a man who claims to have been near the scene reportedly told Fox Digital.

“Lost an icon”

An employee of the company that represented the hip-hop recording artist mourned his passing in a statement provided to Variety magazine.

The representative said that those at the company were “shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of our dear friend and client, Young Dolph.”

“The world has lost an icon, a great man, and beloved artist who has been taken too soon,” the spokesperson added.

The statement continued: “His dedication, drive, hard work, and loyalty to all those around him always came first and he will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this most difficult time.”

“Another reminder”

As those close to Young Dolph mourn his death, the Memphis Police Department put out a statement on Twitter regarding the apparent homicide that asked for anyone with information to come forward.

“This shooting is another example of the senseless gun violence we are experiencing locally and nationwide,” the police statement read. “Our hearts go out to the Thornton family and all who are affected by this horrific act of violence.”

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland also weighed in on the 36-year-old rapper’s death in a statement to the Associated Press lamenting how common these tragedies are.

“The tragic shooting death of rap artist Young Dolph serves as another reminder of the pain that violent crime brings with it,” Strickland said, adding that his “thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
