Wyoming Republicans have officially disavowed anti-Trump U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).
Breitbart reports that, over the weekend, the Wyoming Republican Party decided to no longer recognize Cheney as a Republican.
The Wyoming Republican Party did so in a vote that it held on Saturday. The final tally was 31 to 29 in favor of no longer recognizing Cheney as a Republican. The Associated Press reports that Republican officials in roughly one-third of Wyoming’s 23 counties also voted to no longer recognize Cheney as a Republican.
A spokesman for Cheney responded to the news, saying:
It’s laughable to suggest Liz is anything but a committed conservative Republican. She is bound by her oath to the Constitution. Sadly, a portion of the Wyoming GOP leadership has abandoned that fundamental principle, and instead allowed themselves to be held hostage to the lies of a dangerous and irrational man [i.e. former President Donald Trump].
Background
For Cheney to claim, at this point, that she is a “committed conservative Republican” is what is really laughable here.
Cheney is one of ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following the so-called Capitol Riot that occurred on January 6th. She has continued with her anti-Trump rhetoric to this day, despite the fact that it cost her a House leadership position and despite the fact that, as a result, her political career appears to be heading down the drain.
Cheney, in recent months, has been cozying up with some of the worst Democrats in Washington D.C. She has accepted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) offer to serve on the Democrat-led committee that is “investigating” what happened at the Capitol on January 6th. Just recently, Cheney voted to hold Steve Bannon in criminal contempt for defying the committee’s subpoenas, despite the fact that even left-leaning legal scholars don’t believe that doing so is legal.
Since when does a “committed conservative Republican” do any of this? This is why when CNN recently raised the question, “is there a lane for Liz Cheney in New Hampshire in 2024?” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) responded: “Yes. It’s called the Democratic Primary.”
Cheney’s days could be numbered
It is looking as though Cheney is going to have a very difficult time getting reelected. She is facing Harriet Hageman, a Cheyenne-based attorney who has already been endorsed by Trump.
Hageman recently put out a statement saying:
Liz Cheney stopped recognizing what Wyomingites care about a long time ago. When she launched her war against President Trump, she completely broke with where we are as a state.
Polls would seem to indicate that the people of Wyoming agree with Hageman here.
Trump recently pointed out that “Warmonger Liz Cheney (challenge accepted) is on the SKIDS with a 19% approval rating.”
