San Diego PD says ‘looting’ is a ‘racist’ term in the wake of string of robberies

California has experienced a rash of mass robberies or looting events at major retailers that have drawn national attention in recent days.

But apparently, according to the Washington Examiner, the San Diego Police Department is cautioning against using the term “looting” to describe the brazen criminal acts, announcing that such a term could be considered “racist” in nature, but failed to provide evidence of such a bizarre and ridiculous claim.

“As the Bay Area grapples with a wave of seemingly organized smash and grab robberies this weekend, policing and journalism analysts are cautioning against the use of the term looting,” an ABC 7 report noted.

The announcement came after additional retail stores experienced the same type of looting, or “organized robbery” incidents in recent days, including instances in San Jose, Santana Row, Hayward, and Walnut Creek.

Why is looting “racist”

Technically speaking, “looting” is a term used when stores are ransacked during a ‘”state of emergency,” “local emergency,” or “evacuation order,” according to California state law.

But colloquially, the term is used to describe exactly what has taken place in recent days at the major retailers that were mobbed by massive groups of criminals taking anything and everything they want.

Lorenzo Boyd, a professor of criminal justice and community policing at the University of New Haven, explained why he believes using the term “looting” could be considered racist in nature.

“Looting is a term that we typically use when people of color or urban dwellers are doing something,” the professor, also a former police officer, said. “We tend not to use that term for other people when they do the exact same thing.”

However, his argument was blatantly false, given that over past years, the entire country has watched looters during riots and natural disasters of literally all skin colors.

Recent robberies

The situation in California with large groups of thieves storming into retail stores and taking everything in sight, along with assaulting store employees, is quickly spiraling out of control in a state that has seemingly looked the other way on enforcing retail theft laws.

According to a San Francisco CBS affiliate, one of the latest incidents involved a group of some 80 thieves storming into a Nordstrom store in Walnut Creek, an affluent suburb of Oakland. The organized group managed to block the roads leading to the store with roughly 25 cars in order to blockade responding authorities.

The situation is so bad that authorities warned residents in the general area to be on alert, as similar mass looting events are likely to take place in the coming days.
