How low can a president go?
A new poll has President Joe Biden’s approval rating dipping below 38 percent, making it one of Biden’s lowest approval percentages since taking office.
The poll comes from USAToday/Suffolk University. The pollster conducted the poll between November 3rd and 5th, surveying 1,000 registered voters. And, what the pollster found is that President Biden’s approval rating is currently sitting at only 37.8 percent.
This is not out of line with other polls. According to RealClearPolitics’ poll aggregator, Biden, on average has an approval rating of 42.8 percent and a disapproval rating of 51.5 percent. Combined, this means that Biden is underwater, on average, by 8.7 percentage points.
Biden tries to explain
During an interview on Monday, Biden tried to explain away his terrible polling, which is by no means a new phenomenon. It has been going since at least the summer now.
Biden, during the interview, tried to make it appear as though the poor polling hasn’t bothered him.
“Well, look, the poll I saw just before I walked in on another station was my polling number is down, but it’s 48% to 52%,” Biden claimed. “But look, the point is I didn’t run because of the polls.”
At this point, Biden went on to try to claim that the policies that he is pursuing, including his Build Back Better plan, will set things aright.
But, in the meantime, Biden said that his polling numbers were in line with his predecessors, particularly Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, at this point in their presidencies. And, Biden further blamed his poor poll numbers on the “anxiety” of the American people, resulting from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the surging gas prices.
Looking to the future
The USA poll also had some good news for Republicans. It found that Republicans are currently dominating a generic congressional poll, up 8 percentage points on the Democrats ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
The poll also found that former President Donald Trump would currently beat Biden in a head-to-head matchup for the presidency, 44 percent to 40 percent. A recent poll from Harvard/Harris backed this up, finding that Americans approve of Trump’s handling of important issues more than they approve of Biden’s handling of them.
The bottom line is that the polls suggest that the Democrats have a lot of work to do ahead of the upcoming elections. We’ll have to see if the hole that they have dug for themselves is too deep to climb out of.
