Supposedly erudite Obama embarrassingly flubs country names in COP26 speech

Former President Barack Obama mixed up Ireland and Scotland during a speech at the COP26 conference in Glasgow on Monday.

Near the end of his remarks, Obama called Scotland the Emerald Isles. The Emerald Isles are another name for Ireland.

“Since we’re in the Emerald Isles here, let me quote the bard, William Shakespeare.‘What wound,’ he writes, ‘did ever heal but by degrees,’” Obama said during the speech.

Say What?

Despite the country mix up, Obama spoke to those in his audience regarding climate change as a long-term issue rather than something that could be quickly solved.

The former president called for “ongoing activism” that would stand the test of time.

The nearly hour-long speech drew strong applause from his audience despite the mix up concerning the two countries.

Now What?

Obama appears to be serving as the clean up act for President Joe Biden in Glasgow. During Biden’s recent appearances at the event, he was recorded falling asleep.

In his own prepared remarks, Biden continued to apologize for America’s inaction on climate change, blaming the previous administration for leaving the Paris Agreement.

Obama may have gotten the Emerald Isles wrong, but his speech was far better than the remarks by the current president.
