Many Democrats have expressed resentment over the fact that their razor-thin Senate majority has allowed moderates like Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) to control the agenda.
However, if new polling data proves to be correct, then their party’s circumstances are about to get a whole lot worse, as new polls reveal that Democratic Senate candidates are trailing in the polls in the key swing states of New Hampshire and Nevada.
On Friday, the Post Millennial cited several new surveys that suggest Senate Democrats are in for an uphill battle during the 2022 midterm elections. With each party holding 50 seats, the loss of a single race would flip control of the chamber.
Dems face tough numbers
One of the surveys is an internal poll from Nevada Senate hopeful Adam Laxalt’s campaign that was conducted between Sept. 11 and Sept. 15.
According to Newsweek, the poll had Laxalt besting incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) at 39% to Masto’s 37%. Meanwhile, 12% of participants selected “none of the above.”
“Internal polling from September shows that this has quickly become a very tight race,” a memo from the Laxalt campaign said. “With each passing day of the Biden presidency, the environment gets better for Republicans.”
What’s more, Newsweek cited another poll conducted in August by VCreek/AMG that showed Laxalt besting Masto by a full 10 points.
Nevada is apparently not the only state where polls indicate that Dems are potentially in for a hard time next year.
Biden’s fault?
Newsweek reported that a Saint Anselm College Survey Center poll conducted between Aug. 24 and Aug. 26 revealed New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu (R) had a nine-point edge in his race to unseat Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH).
The survey also noted sharp differences in the two candidates’ respective approval ratings. Whereas Sununu enjoys a 30 point net positive approval rating, Hassan’s is two points underwater.
In the press release accompanying its poll, Saint Anselm College Survey Center argued that Democrats are suffering the down-ballot effects of President Joe Biden’s sinking support levels.
New Hampshire Institute of Politics Executive Director Neil Levesque said that “Biden’s job approval has steadily declined since he took office in response to several challenges,” providing examples such as the botched U.S. troop pullout from Afghanistan.
