The Washington Examiner reported that a one-time Republican congressional candidate is now facing charges related to the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.
The Examiner reported that former U.S. special forces operator Jeremy Brown was taken into custody Friday in Florida by federal authorities.
A Department of Justice (DOJ) statement said Brown is being charged with “[k]nowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority.”
Tactical gear?
The statement added that the former soldier also stands accused of attempting to “disrupt the orderly conduct of government business or official functions.”
The DOJ also provided an attached court filing which included still images from video footage that appeared to show Brown at the U.S. Capitol building, donning tactical clothing and gear.
The statement said that a review of “body worn camera footage from January 6, 2021 and was able to identify BROWN by his distinctive attire outside the East doors of the Capitol at approximately 4:27 PM.”
“During this period, Brown remained at least one hundred feet past the barriers that law enforcement had initially set up to protect the Capitol,” the filing continued.
It added, “On the body worn camera video, BROWN carried zip ties attached to his belt, as well as a radio, surgical trauma shears, and tactical gear.”
“Metropolitan Police Officers, in attempting to resecure the Capitol Grounds, advanced in a line and yelled ‘Back’ in unison. Instead of voluntarily complying with police orders, BROWN only retreated when pushed with police baton sticks,” it added.
Prosecutions continue
“During this encounter, BROWN repeatedly claimed that the officers were, in his opinion, violating the laws and the Constitution of the United States,” the DOJ said.
In 2020, Brown sought the Republican nomination in Florida’s 14th congressional district but ultimately withdrew his candidacy before the primary ended. The GOP nomination was won by Christine Quinn, who later lost in the general election to incumbent Democrat Kathy Castor (FL).
A report released by the DOJ last month revealed that over 600 people from nearly every state in the country have been arrested for alleged crimes relating to the Jan. 6 riot.
