According to the New York Post, Vice President Kamala Harris took what many have described as a clandestine trip to Palm Springs, California, on Friday, amid tense negotiations over several spending bills.
The trip took place as the Democrats’ spending agenda stalled in Congress, with moderate and progressive Democrats failing to reach a compromise on the multi-trillion-dollar proposals.
But according to the Post, Harris actually left before President Joe Biden went to Congress in an attempt to unite the Democrats on the legislation. This fact alone makes the trip surprising with many asking why one of the top Democrats in D.C. would take off at such an important time.
However, additional questions have been raised given the apparent secrecy of her trip to the West Coast.
Shrouded in secrecy
What reporters do know about the trip is that Harris flew from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, on Friday afternoon, and she reportedly arrived at Palm Springs International Airport in California on Friday evening.
It’s also known that Harris returned from her trip on Saturday to Washington D.C. However, other than those updates, not much else is known about why, exactly, she bolted to California on such an important day.
It gets even more interesting, as Harris banned the press from both observing her departure from Maryland and banned them from covering her arrival in California. Local Democrats in California appear to have been taken off guard by Harris’s arrival as well.
In addition, the purpose of Harris’ trip is seemingly being kept from the public. The White House has yet to offer an explanation, and the trip was not explained on Harris’s official schedule. That schedule, in fact, shows no events, either public or private, for the time period of her California trip.
Possible reasons why
Although it’s unclear where Harris went on Friday, it’s well-known that Harris didn’t exactly have a great week, politically speaking, and the trip also came amid infighting between the moderates and progressives in the Democratic Party over Biden’s spending legislation.
Harris became the subject of criticism for appearing to agree with a student who accused Israel of committing “ethnic genocide,” and who criticized the U.S. government for funding Israel’s missile defense system. Harris, subsequently, tried to clarify that she wasn’t agreeing with the student’s ridiculous remarks.
Also, according to The Daily Wire, Harris and her office are reportedly upset about her recent appearance on ABC’s The View. Harris had to do her interview from backstage after members of the show tested positive for COVID-19. As it would turn out, the tests were false positives, and now Harris’s people are accusing producers of The View of having withheld information prior to Harris’ appearance.
Perhaps Harris’ trip to California was a quick escape from the madness in D.C., or perhaps there’s greater meaning to it. Either way, it doesn’t appear as if the White House is interested in telling the public anything.
