Fox News has reported that Hollywood celebrity and Democratic activist Alyssa Milano was taken into custody on Tuesday during a protest outside of the White House.
The 48-year-old Milano was reportedly upset that President Joe Biden and Democrats on Capitol Hill aren’t doing enough to push back against state-level anti-voting fraud legislation, and urged them to take action to end the Republican filibuster in order to pass federal voting legislation.
Why was she there?
“I was just arrested for demanding the Biden Administration and the Senate to use their mandate to protect voting rights,” the once-famous actress announced in a tweet.
“Stand with me and @peoplefor and tell the Senate and White House that voting rights shouldn’t depend on where you live. #DontMuteOurVote,” Milano added.
The protest was organized by a left-wing organization known as People for the American Way, with the demonstration primarily a show of support for the Freedom to Vote Act.
The group is led by progressive activist Ben Jealous, who tweeted, “We came back to the White House to deliver a clear message to President Biden: we need actions that match the urgency of his words on voting rights – and time is running out.”
Jealous added: “The Freedom to Vote Act has to pass now if we are going to protect voting rights in the next election for all of us: for Black voters and Brown voters, for women, for younger voters and older voters, voters with disabilities and working people of all backgrounds.”
Potential fraud
In addition to making Election Day a federal holiday, the Senate bill aims to prohibit states from limiting absentee voting and limits their ability to pass voter ID laws.
According to Fox News, Senate Republicans have pledged to filibuster the legislation on the grounds that it will make election fraud easier to commit.
The network also reported last month that 23 states have threatened to take action over a similar House bill called the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
“The bill, as introduced, would allow the United States Department of Justice to usurp the authority states rightly possess over their own elections, essentially federalizing the election system,” a letter from Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita (R) read.
He added that it would allow the Department of Justice “to challenge any new or existing election law based on the whims of the party in power and its desire to manipulate election laws to increase its chances to remain in power.”
