White House admits Biden lied about visiting Pittsburgh synagogue after 2018 shooting

The White House just admitted it: President Joe Biden did not visit the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018 following a mass shooting there in 2018 that claimed the lives of 11 people.

In a statement to the New York Post on Friday, the White House conceded that Biden wasn’t there in the days following the attack. According to Breitbart, “a lone gunman” entered the place of worship during a morning service in October 2018, ultimately carrying out “what is now considered the worst attack against American Jews in United States history.”

Biden had said the day prior that he did visit the site of the massacre.

“I remember spending time at the, you know, going to the, you know, the Tree of Life synagogue, speaking with them,” the president said, according to Breitbart.

He wasn’t there

Biden’s comments came during a brief virtual address Thursday to Jewish leaders across the country, the New York Post reported.

But it didn’t take long for representatives of the synagogue to dispute the president’s account.

The Post reported:

In a phone interview, [Barb] Feige, executive director [at the Tree of Life synagogue] since July 2019, said firmly that “no” Biden didn’t visit, even before taking office when he had a lower public profile as a former vice president and then-Democratic presidential candidate.

In a subsequent statement to the Post, the White House said President Biden had been “referring to a call he had with the Tree of Life rabbi in 2019.”

Biden’s lies

The White House also released a statement directly from Hazzan Jeffrey Myers, rabbi at the synagogue who, according to the Post, “indicated there were no hard feelings” between him and the president. “President Biden kindly called me on my cell phone as I was sitting in Dulles Airport awaiting a return flight to Pittsburgh after I testified before Congress in July 2019,” the rabbi said, according to the Post.

While the White House tries to save face, there’s no hiding the fact that Biden is on shaky ground with voters — and his latest lie isn’t going to help matters. Fox News reports that the president’s approval rating has plummeted in the wake of the botched withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan on his watch, another point Biden misled Americans on.

He’s even tried to get other world leaders to join him. Reuters reported exclusively last week that Biden had urged now-former Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani to help him “project a different picture” on the Taliban, which ultimately seized Kabul, as the U.S. was completing its withdrawal.

“I need not tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things are not going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban,” Biden said on a call with Ghani before the Afghan leader fled the country, Reuters reported. “And there is a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture.”
