Upon being sworn in on Jan. 20, Joe Biden became the oldest person ever to serve as president of the United States. After a campaign full of mix-ups, including forgetting what state he was in, apparently confusing his wife with his sister, and even telling voters that he was seeking a seat in the United States Senate, many started to wonder if Biden, at 78, was really up to the task, however — and as his approval ratings plummet following a botched withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the questions are coming roaring back.
But in the eyes of his predecessor, it’s not Biden’s age that’s holding him back. In an exclusive, two-hour phone call with Breitbart News last week, former President Donald Trump said “something is wrong” with Biden — but insisted that “he is not an old man.”
“Something is going wrong”
Trump also said he doesn’t expect Biden to run for president again in 2024.
“I don’t think you’ll face Biden,” the former president told Breitbart. “Biden is not an old man, by the way, but there’s something wrong. But he is not an old man — he’s going to be 79; that is not old.”
Trump added:
I know people that are much older than that, and they’re as sharp as they were 40 years ago. Biden is not an old person. They talk about age. If you’re in your 70s or even your 80s, I know so many people even in their 90s, like Bernie Marcus of Home Depot and so many others; they’re in their 90s and sharp as can be.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the former president is willing to shrug off concerns about Biden’s cognitive health.
“But something is wrong,” Trump told Breitbart of his successor. “Something is going wrong there. I don’t like to predict that far forward. It’s such a long time, and I don’t know — things are happening left and right.”
“They can’t believe it”
Later in his talk with Breitbart, Trump commented on reports that Biden had refused to communicate with other world leaders as the Taliban was tightening its grip on Kabul following the departure of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
“I would imagine Biden was not in a mood to take phone calls at that point because he was getting hammered,” the former president remarked.
Trump also said that he has been speaking with those same politicians about how Biden has handled the withdrawal effort. “They can’t believe it. They can’t believe it. Just like you can’t believe it. Just like any sane rational person can’t believe it,” the former president said, according to Breitbart.
“We were going to get out — but we were going to get out with dignity and with honor. We were going to get out with all of the people,” Trump said. “And we were going to take all of the equipment.”
Despite Biden previously promising to get all Americans and Afghan interpreters who helped U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by Aug. 31, the State Department acknowledged at a press briefing Thursday that this goal was not met.
