Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus recently spoke out against the Biden administration in the wake of a chaotic U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Among the most outspoken lawmakers involved in Tuesday’s press conference was Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who called for the impeachment not only of President Joe Biden but also Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
“If you can get him back from vacation”
“It is time for action,” she declared. “Impeach Biden, impeach Kamala Harris, and throw in the secretary of state if you can get him back from vacation.”
Addressing leaders on her own side of the aisle, Boebert urged House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to call for a vote to vacate the chair of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
“The blame starts at the top with Biden and his hand-picked vice president, who bragged that she was there, making the same bad decisions,” Boebert added. “And if not for her own dereliction of duty, she should be impeached for not demanding we invoke the 25th Amendment.”
Blinken, who is said to have been on vacation just before the Afghan government fell to the Taliban, is already facing calls for his impeachment. Of course, with a Democratic majority on Capitol Hill, any effort to remove Biden or anyone in his administration is almost certain to fail.
“His son did not deserve to die”
Reps. Andy Harris (R-MD) and Ralph Norman (R-SC) introduced articles of impeachment against the secretary of state, asserting that he ignored a July 13 warning that the Taliban had gained strength in Afghanistan and that Americans should begin evacuating earlier than planned.
Had that warning been heeded, critics say it would have given the U.S. more than a month to move American citizens to safety instead of the roughly two-week evacuation effort carried out last month. It might have also provided for the use of Bagram airbase to evacuate military personnel and civilians rather than the smaller airport in Kabul.
For her part, Boebert referenced the troop withdrawal — and a terror attack at the Kabul airport that left 13 service members dead — in her recent remarks.
“The father of one of our fallen soldiers said, ‘Hey, I’m just a carpenter, and even I can figure out how horrible this exit strategy was,'” she said. “We all know that we needed to leave Afghanistan, and we all see how failed this mission was. He’s right, and you know it. His son did not deserve to die.”
Of course, even if Republicans were successful in impeaching Biden, the line of succession appears to guarantee that another Democrat would take his place. The only viable strategy for removing America from the hands of the Democratic Party involves frustrated Americans taking to the polls in next year’s midterm elections.
