As America grieves those who lost their lives serving in America’s longest war, the ingratitude of our political leaders for their sacrifice could not be more obvious.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has joined her friend Joe Biden in snubbing the 13 U.S. casualties who were killed in a terrorist attack in the conflict’s final days. As a face-saving maneuver to protect the president, Pelosi prevented the fallen troops’ names from being read aloud on the House floor, House Republicans said, according to The Daily Wire.
According to the Military Times, the service members’ names are: in the Marine Corps, Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, Sgt. Nicole L. Gee, Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, Cpl. Hunter Lopez, Cpl. Daegan W. Page, Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez, Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza, Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz, Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum, Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, and Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui; in the Navy, Corpsman Maxton W. Soviak; and in the Army, Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss.
Soldiers snubbed on House floor
They were all just children when the war began 20 years ago under President George W. Bush. Republicans attempted to have their names read but were prevented by Pelosi, said Florida Republican Brian Mast (R), who lost both of his legs serving in Afghanistan. “They did not acknowledge us, and just closed the House down,” Rep. Mast said, according to The Daily Wire.
Florida Republican Rep. Greg Steube, also a veteran, echoed Mast. “That’s how far our nation has fallen,” he said in a tweet shared by The Floridian.
According to The Daily Wire, Congressman Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) said that Pelosi, who has steadfastly supported Biden through the Afghanistan disaster, was desperate to “cover up” the Biden administration’s bloody and chaotic evacuation.
“Consoler in chief”?
Pelosi is a hardcore political hack, so her response is not surprising. She has as much respect as Biden, who was caught checking his watch during a ceremony for the 13 troops on Sunday, the New York Post reported. Meanwhile, Gold Star families who met with him say he was cold, aloof, and spent most of his time talking about his son Beau, a veteran who died from brain cancer.
It is a revealing moment, as Biden has often been described by supporters as a paragon of compassion and decency, a so-called “consoler in chief” who can relate to the suffering of ordinary people.
Oh, sure, Biden can give a sentimental speech like the best of them, but at the end of the day, he’s just another used car salesman who sees America’s heroes as stage props for his personal ambitions. Ditto for the slovenly stooges in Pentagon leadership, who apparently knew about the airport bombing beforehand but did nothing to stop it.
Political class lets heroes down
But it’s not just Democrats who have a flippant disregard for American lives. As Tucker Carlson highlighted Wednesday night, Republican neoconservatives like Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have dismissed the conflict’s costs for years.
According to RealClearPolitics, Carlson played on his Fox News show a clip of Graham, seated next to then-President Barack Obama, saying, “We have a game plan in Afghanistan that I think justifies the expenditures of blood and treasure that’s about to come.” That was 12 years ago.
The 13 service members killed in Kabul were failed by our corrupt political class. The Pelosis and Bidens and Lindsey Grahams of the world are not worthy of saying their names.
