‘I do not recognize his man’: McCain ‘disgusted’ with Biden’s Afghanistan policy

President Joe Biden’s approval rating continues to decline in the aftermath of a botched troop withdrawal from Afghanistan last month as even some of those who supported him in the presidential campaign now vocally criticize him.

Conservative pundit Meghan McCain, for example, sided with Biden over former President Donald Trump — but she recently signaled that she might be regretting her choice.

“In the line of a suicide bomber”

According to the Washington Examiner, McCain’s latest remarks on the president came in response to a speech in which the president once again sought to blame others — including his predecessor and the Afghan people themselves — for the failures of the recent withdrawal.

That speech marked the end of a nearly 20-year war, which was punctuated by a frantic evacuation effort that is believed to have left hundreds of Americans and many more allies behind.

In a tweet on Tuesday, McCain asserted: “13 American soldiers are dead — most of them between the ages of 20-23 because they were put in [harm’s] way chaotically in the line of fire of a suicide bomber.”

The former co-host of The View went on to write that she was “disgusted” with Biden’s claim that chaos was inevitable upon pulling U.S. troops out of Afghanistan.

Minutes later, McCain tweeted: “This is extremely difficult for me to say: I once thought I truly knew Joe Biden and he helped me through pain and grief, for which I am grateful. This man on tv giving this speech, I do not recognize this man.”

The Biden-McCain bond

She concluded by calling on God to “help our country” and “help the Americans we have abandoned.”

MeCain, the daughter of the late U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), has long been close to the Biden family due to the two men’s respective long tenures in the Senate.

When the elder McCain died of brain cancer in 2018, Biden was among those who offered comfort to the grieving daughter. The president’s eldest son, Beau, died of the same disease.

Whether due to the close personal connection or Meghan McCain’s dislike of Trump, she enthusiastically endorsed the Biden presidential campaign and championed him as a decent and empathetic man who could effectively manage the nation’s affairs.

She now appears to have recognized that she misjudged the situation. It remains to be seen how many never-Trump Republicans will similarly become disillusioned as the Biden administration continues.
