President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), both avowed Catholics, have announced their separate intentions to do what they can to block Texas’s new anti-abortion law.
In case you missed it, the Supreme Court this week decided not to hear a legal challenge to Texas’s new Heartbeat Act, which bans abortions from taking place once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is usually at about the six-week mark of the pregnancy.
What this means is that Texas is set to become the first state to successfully enforce such an anti-abortion law, which is the most serious restriction on the right to have an abortion since the Supreme Court invented that right back in the 1970s in Roe v. Wade.
That is, unless Biden and Pelosi can do something about it.
Biden’s “whole-of-government effort”
Biden blasted the Supreme Court in a statement that he released after the court’s decision, which he called “an unprecedented assault on a woman’s constitutional rights.”
“Rather than use its supreme authority to ensure justice could be fairly sought, the highest Court of our land will allow millions of women in Texas in need of critical reproductive care to suffer while courts sift through procedural complexities,” Biden said.
In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, Biden said that he is “directing that Council and the Office of the White House Counsel to launch a whole-of-government effort to respond to this decision.” Part of this “whole-of-government effort,” according to Biden, will be having the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Justice (DOJ) legally challenge Texas’s law.
Nothing on this front, though, has been announced just yet.
Pelosi says it’s time to codify Roe v. Wade
Like Biden, Pelosi also blasted the Supreme Court for its decision, calling it a “catastrophe.” Unlike Biden, though, Pelosi’s vowed to pursue a legislative solution.
“This ban necessitates codifying Roe vs. Wade,” Pelosi said. She added that, “upon our return, the House will bring up congresswoman Judy Chu’s Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine into law reproductive health care for all women across America.
Of course, for those who really believe in and who adhere to the Constitution, legislation is the way to go, if you want to legalize abortion. The problem comes when you have a group of nine unelected judges deciding the matter instead of the American people, like the Supreme Court did in Roe v. Wade.
Returning the issue of abortion to the American people is long overdue. Perhaps the Supreme Court’s decision this week is a step in that direction. But, we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up just yet.
