While the political establishment may have little appetite for it, there is a growing sentiment among Republican members of Congress that President Joe Biden should be impeached and removed from office over his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan.
One House GOP lawmaker told Just the News that an impeachment conversation was “absolutely” happening and implied that even some Democrats were considering the idea but too afraid of their leadership to say so publicly.
That member is Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL), and her remarks on impeachment came during an interview with journalist John Solomon for his podcast.
“Absolutely” happening
“There’s absolutely that conversation happening,” Cammack told Solomon when asked if House Republicans are seriously discussing impeachment.
“And I absolutely hear people loud and clear all across America, saying, ‘Why in the hell have we not impeached this guy? Why are we not doing this?'” she continued. “Folks, elections have consequences, and we don’t have the votes.”
That was a reference to the reality that Democrats maintain narrow control over both the House and Senate, meaning an impeachment of the Democratic president would be virtually impossible unless a number of elected Democrats in both chambers crossed over to support the effort.
While that seems unlikely, it may not be entirely out of the question, as Cammack insinuated that she was aware of some Democrats who disagreed with the job Biden is doing but remained quiet because “they will not go against Nancy Pelosi.”
House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) “is a very scary figure in the Democrat Party,” the congresswoman warned, one who would make the lives of dissenting Democrats and “everyone they know … a living hell for them.”
The phone call
One of the several reasons why impeachment is being discussed was a recent Reuters report detailing the contents of a leaked transcript of a July phone call between President Biden and then-Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who ultimately fled Afghanistan amid the Taliban takeover a month later.
In that call, Biden conditioned continued U.S. aid and assistance on the Afghanis devising a new military strategy and urged Ghani to do whatever he could, including lying if necessary, to alter the public “perception” that the Taliban had momentum and the Afghan government and military were weak.
“You don’t say that if you [aren’t] intending to mislead the general public,” Cammack told Solomon. “That transcript is pretty damning.”
Just the News noted that it isn’t just House Republicans who are talking impeachment, either, as a recent Rasmussen poll found that 52% of likely voters believed President Biden should resign — and 60% said he should be impeached — over his horrific mishandling of the Afghanistan withdrawal.
