Biden approval rating plummets on heels of disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal

President Joe Biden’s approval rating is in a nosedive as the nation makes a closer assessment of his leadership over the chaotic evacuation from Afghanistan.

Just 4% of Americans approve of the president, according to an NPR poll.

Biden approval rating in a nosedive

Biden’s approval rating has dropped a stunning 6% since July, according to the NPR survey, bringing Biden to a new low. Kabul fell on Aug. 15, and the war officially ended on Aug. 30.

The biggest shift occurred among independent voters, with only 36% thinking that Biden is doing a good job, while Democrats are slightly less approving but still sticking with Biden. Republicans dislike him slightly more than they did previously, NPR reported.

Biden has taken credit for ending the 20-year “forever war” that has long been unpopular with the public, and most voters — 71% — agree that the occupation of Afghanistan was a failure. Only 10% say that no troops should have been withdrawn, according to NPR.

But Biden has received harsh ratings for how he handled the bloody, chaotic final days.

Not surprisingly, 61% of voters disapprove of Biden’s evacuation from Afghanistan, in which 13 American troops were killed and many people, including Afghan allies and hundreds of Americans, were left behind after the mission concluded.

Biden’s miserable month

Biden has responded to criticism mostly by passing blame — to Donald Trump, who initiated the withdrawal, to the Afghans for failing to defend their nation, and to Americans who he says failed to heed warnings to get out.

At the same time, Biden is convinced that the evacuation from Afghanistan was an “extraordinary success,” and said Tuesday, “The bottom line is there is no evacuation from the end of a war that you can run without the kinds of complexities, challenge, and threats we faced. None.”

But passing the buck has not prevented Biden’s approval ratings from dropping below 50% for the first time since he came into office.

According to RealClearPolitics, Biden’s net approval rating is at minus four, and a recent Emerson Poll found that former President Donald Trump had a one-point advantage against Biden in a one-to-one matchup in 2024.

Of course, the public is fickle and it remains possible that the media will revert back soon to being Biden’s cheerleader. But there’s no mistaking that he has had one hell of a month.
