Study: More than 80K ballots mailed to Wisconsin voters in 2020 were marked ‘undeliverable’ or ‘missing’

A new study out of Wisconsin found that nearly 83,000 ballots mailed out to voters in the state ahead of the 2020 presidential race were ultimately marked “missing or undeliverable,” Breitbart reported Friday.

The study, conducted by a watchdog group known as the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), found a total of 82,766 ballots from the 2020 race were unaccounted for in Wisconsin. Ballots were mailed out to voters as a precaution amid widespread outbreaks of COVID-19.

According to Breitbart, the number of lost or missing ballots is “more than four times greater than Joe Biden’s 20,682 vote certified margin of victory in the state.”

It’s a development that’s reportedly renewed questions about former President Donald Trump’s crushing loss — and that’s brought on additional calls for reform to help ensure irregularities don’t occur in future national elections.

“Mail ballots invite error”

According to the PILF, 76,308 of the lost ballots were classified as “unknown,” and another 6,458 of them were marked “undeliverable.”

In a statement on the study, PILF President J. Christian Adams said the group’s findings make clear “the cost of the rush to mail balloting — lost ballots.”

“The federal data show the 2020 election had more mail ballots that were never counted than the margin of victory in the Presidential election in Wisconsin. This isn’t the way to run an election,” Adams said.

He went on: “Mail ballots invite error, disenfranchisement of voters, and puts the inept U.S. Post Office determining the outcome of elections.”

“A core system failure”

According to Breitbart, the report also revealed a striking disparity in the number of missing ballots compared to years past. Wisconsin sent some 1.4 million ballots to voters in 2020, and 80,000 of them went missing. In 2016, on the other hand, 158,846 ballots were mailed to Wisconsin voters, and of those, only 12,984 were ultimately unaccounted for.

According to Breitbart, 11,138 of the unaccounted for ballots “were classified as ‘unknown,’ while 1,846 were classified as ‘undeliverable.'” And they made up just 47% of Trump’s margin of victory over Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton — a far cry from 2020, when the number of missing ballots was 400% higher than Biden’s margin of victory over Trump.

Breitbart went on to report:

In 2012, 54,077 mail ballots [in Wisconsin] were “undeliverable or unknown,” which was a mere 26 percent of Barack Obama’s 205,204 vote certified margin of victory in the state over Mitt Romney.

Perhaps the PILF put it best in the conclusion of their report: “When Wisconsin loses track of more ballots than the difference between winning and losing its Electoral College votes, that is a core system failure.” It’s hard not to agree.
