Parole board votes to free Sirhan Sirhan, Robert Kennedy’s killer

Sirhan Sirhan, the man who assassinated Robert F. Kennedy, may about to be released from prison.

Breitbart reports that the California parole board on Friday voted in favor of releasing Sirhan.

Parole was granted on the 16th attempt

The California parole board’s decision comes 53 years after Sirhan was arrested for the assassination of Robert Kennedy. He was convicted and sentenced to death, although that punishment was lessened to life in prison after the state abolished the death penalty.

The incident occurred in 1968 after Kennedy won the Democratic primary. Sirhan, a Palestinian immigrant, once said that he disliked Kennedy because of Kennedy’s support of Israel. Accordingly, after killing Kennedy, he said that he did it for his country.

Sirhan, who is now 77 years old, has been trying to get released from prison for decades now. The parole request just granted by the California parole board was his 16th.

The parole board said that it granted the request because Sirhan is no longer a threat to society or to the surviving victims. At the parole hearing, Sirhan said, “I would never put myself in jeopardy again. You have my pledge. I will always look to safety and peace and non-violence.”

According to Breitbart, “George Soros-based Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón” was a factor in the decision.

Kennedy speaks

It may come as a surprise to some to learn that Kennedy’s son, Douglas Kennedy, actually supports the release of Sirhan from prison.

“I believe that all prisoners who are no longer a threat to themselves or others should be released from prison,” Kennedy told Fox News. “I do not believe prison should be used as a punishment.”

Kennedy also spoke at Sirhan’s parole board hearing. “All human beings are worthy of compassion and love, and I believe he is as well,” Kennedy said.

All that is left now for Sirhan’s release is two things: approval from the full parole board, which will take 90 days, and approval from California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), which could take 30 days. It is unclear what either will decide.

The bottom line, though, is that Robert Kennedy’s killer could soon be a free man.
