Kansas GOP Gov candidate drops from race after cancer diagnosis

Former Kansas Republican Gov. Jeff Colyer announced he is dropping out of his run for governor after a recent prostate cancer diagnosis.

“While I have always focused on helping others, for the next few weeks I am going to focus on my health,” Colyer said in a statement, according to The Hill.

“I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer like my father and grandfather. After treatment, I am confident for a full recovery. Given these challenges, Ruth and I have decided to withdraw from the Governor’s race,” he added.

Now What?

After announcing he would drop out of the race, Colyer endorsed Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt as the state’s Republican candidate, according to Breitbart.

Jeff Colyer is a longtime friend who has led an exemplary life of service. Jennifer and I wish Jeff all the best in overcoming his current health challenges, and we will keep Jeff, Ruth and their family in our thoughts and prayers and ask all Kansans to do the same,” Schmidt tweeted.

“As for the governor’s race, I welcome and appreciate Gov. Colyer’s endorsement and agree that now is the time to come together to elect a Republican governor for Kansas next year,” Schmidt added.

Prayers for Colyer and Family

The Johnson County GOP in Kansas provided a supportive statement following Colyer’s announcement.

“Throughout his entire career, Governor Colyer has been a steadfast advocate and humanitarian for the members of his local community, Kansans, and many from across the world. His compassion and selfless service to others is remarkable and to be admired,” it said.

“The JCRP Board requests that you join us in keeping Jeff, Ruth and the entire Colyer family in prayer at this time. We wish Governor Colyer a quick and complete recovery,” it added.
