Never has so little been said, by a man uttering so much, regarding a tragedy he caused, all before a nation mourning the heroes it now must bury due to a single man’s passionless disregard for life.
We are supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. Instead, he betrays our allies while forsaking the sacrifices of our dead, all while appearing behind a podium to answer questions from those he’s preordained. We are leaderless, and I am afraid.
Afraid not so much because President Joseph R. Biden or the Taliban threaten, but because we are in the weakest position we’ve been as a country in the post-Cold War era. America has existed as the sole superpower in the 30 years since the fall of the Soviet Union, and at no point have we ever been weaker.
And now, Americans are dead as a result.
Congress must step in. We’re beyond issues of impeachment or resignation at this stage. Congress must step in to protect the American and Afghan lives at stake. Nancy Pelosi needs to bring Congress back, because the president is actively placing American troops’ and Afghans’ lives in danger with his incompetence.
The president and his military leaders have settled on the bizarre strategy of entrusting American lives to the Taliban, a group we’ve spent the last 20 years killing. The logic behind this decision is so tortured it could have only come from the mind of someone shuffling white papers across institutions in Washington, D.C.
Only someone so plunged into the depths of D.C.-brain could believe that handing over the names of Americans and Afghan allies to the Taliban could be a workable strategy. That’s not hyperbole; it’s literally what Politico was reporting as Biden was preparing for his press conference on the American deaths in Afghanistan.
Politico said Thursday: “U.S. officials in Kabul gave the Taliban a list of names of American citizens, green card holders and Afghan allies to grant entry into the militant-controlled outer perimeter of the city’s airport, a choice that’s prompted outrage behind the scenes from lawmakers and military officials.”
When Politico questioned that decision, they got the following response:
“Basically, they just put all those Afghans on a kill list,” said one defense official, who like others spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic. “It’s just appalling and shocking and makes you feel unclean.”
For weeks now, the Taliban have blocked everyone from Americans to Afghan allies from accessing the airport in Kabul. Though the number of people getting evacuated has indeed gone up in recent days, the number of reports across all news media of Americans and Afghans getting blocked has gone up, too.
And now, on top of that, we’re giving the Taliban a list of the people we want out. The Biden administration expects everyone to trust them, because we’re leaving and “aligned” on a mutual purpose.
At no point in the past 20 years has the United States or Taliban shared a common goal or interest. We’ve spent two decades trying to kill each other.
Biden and his lackeys expect everyone to believe that during this unmitigated disaster, in which Americans have died, he alone has a clear-eyed understanding of the interests and motivations of the Taliban. This is the same administration that believes the Taliban, a group that has never quit its working friendship with al-Qaida, is in the middle of an existential crisis as it charts its path before the international community.
Democrats control the House and the Senate, so I’m not expecting an impeachment trial for Joe Biden over all of these mishaps and blunders. That doesn’t mean Biden’s actions, which have directly cost American lives, don’t merit impeachment. Still, we have to be clear-eyed about reality.
Representatives Seth Moulton (D-MA) and Peter Meijer (R-MI) both made an impromptu visit to Afghanistan to view the situation for themselves. They were both aghast at the conditions there and the decisions by the Biden administration. A bipartisan front from Congress is needed to act.
To that end, Congress should cut off all negotiations, funding, and voting on the president’s agenda until he guarantees and delivers American and Afghan lives to safety.
Joe Biden wants a Sept. 11 photo-op to claim he pulled America out of a war. We need Congress to save the lives that are in a dangerous state from Joe Biden’s actions.
This moment is not a time for a speech or hashtag campaign; time is of the essence, and we must act. Biden is thinking in terms of optics, not saving lives. Biden wants to wave a victory banner on Sept. 11. Congress should deny him that by focusing on what matters: the lives at stake.
We should focus on the most significant airlift in history. Yet, at every step of the way, we’re met with an indifferent form of incompetence that is stunning. Biden should resign in disgrace. He won’t, but he should. And in return, Congress should step in and save as many lives as possible.
Every moment Biden continues unchecked is a danger to America, her allies, and the troops. That’s what I fear, and that’s what Congress should fear, too. Time to act.
