‘Cascading failures’: Biden’s presidency on edge following deaths of US troops in Afghanistan

President Joe Biden is being attacked from all sides following the deaths of 13 U.S. service members from suicide bombings in Kabul on Thursday, leaving the fate of his presidency teetering in the balance.

In addition to the deaths, Americans were also outraged to learn that Biden’s administration gave names of Americans and Afghan allies to the Taliban for the purpose of identifying who it wanted to evacuate, a development first revealed in a Thursday report from Politico.

As Fox News reports, even Democratic lawmakers are coming out to criticize Biden’s actions, which follow the sudden Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in the middle of a U.S.-led military pullout.

“Although it is clear to me that we could not continue to put American [service members] in danger for an unwinnable war, I also believe that the evacuation process appears to have been egregiously mishandled,” Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA) wrote in a series of tweets Thursday, according to Fox. “In order to move forward, we need answers and accountability regarding the cascading failures that led us to this moment.”

Republicans demand resignation

Republicans are going even further, with many demanding that Biden step down because of his failure to manage the situation successfully.

According to Fox, Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC) said in a tweet that Biden should “resign and turn the job over to someone who can handle it.”

In his full statement, Rice said, “Well Joe, you’ve proven yourself incapable of handling your job as Commander in Chief. You ignored your advisors, rushed this haphazard withdrawal without appropriate conditions and before evacuating our citizens and friends. Your ineptitude has now cost at least 12 American lives.”

Loss of confidence

Biden’s approval numbers are plunging amid the crisis, which blindsided Americans who wanted the pullout but were assured that the Taliban was unlikely to rapidly take over.

A USA Today/Suffolk University poll released this week had Biden significantly upside down in his approval ratings, with 41% approving of the job he’s doing and 55% disapproving.

Among independents, Biden has only a dismal 32% approval rating, which is a steep decline from earlier polls.

Even if Biden stubbornly holds on through this crisis, congressional investigations led by Democrats have already been promised, as the Associated Press notes. The president is on the shakiest of ground at this point, as well he should be with American lives at stake.
