California governor cancels campaign rally after Kamala Harris pulls out

Vice President Kamala Harris was scheduled to make a trip to the Bay Area on Friday to help embattled Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom campaign against an ongoing recall effort.

But according to the Los Angeles Times, Harris was forced to cancel her plans after a deadly attack on the airport in Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul left 13 American military personnel dead.

A spokesperson for Newsom’s anti-recall campaign told the Times that the governor nixed the rally altogether after Harris announced she would skip out.

The news of Harris’ cancellation came Thursday afternoon in a tweet from the vice president’s spokesperson, Symone Sanders.

As the Times noted, Harris had spent much of the last week on a diplomatic trip to Asia. She had been slated to head to California on her way back to Washington.

Biden plans trip

According to the New York Post, Harris’ slated appearance alongside the governor “was meant to boost Newsom ahead of what is expected to be a close recall vote Sept. 14.”

Joe Biden has also expressed support for Newsom, the Post notes, with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki indicating Wednesday that the president would soon be headed to the Golden State himself in support of the governor.

“I don’t have a date for you at this point in time,” she told reporters, according to The New York Times, “but that is still certainly his plan.”

“The politics of personal destruction”

Newsom certainly can use all the help he can get as he goes up against conservative columnist and pundit Larry Elder in what has become a surprisingly close race. Elder “quickly” emerged as the frontrunner among more than four dozen candidates vying for Newsom’s spot, Fox News reports, and if he wins, the Republican would become California’s first-ever Black governor.

But those on the left aren’t making it easy for Elder. According to Fox, the gubernatorial hopeful has faced allegations of racism including from the Los Angeles Times, which published an op-ed calling him “the Black face of white supremacy.”

Elder, for his part, says it’s all par for the course. “I anticipated that would happen. This is why a lot of people don’t go into politics,” he said, according to Fox, “because of the politics of personal destruction.”
