According to the Washington Examiner, during a recent speech given at the White House, President Joe Biden suggested that the U.S. federal government would deploy nuclear weapons against any Americans who might choose to take part in a revolution.
The bizarre remarks didn’t go unnoticed by Washington Examiner columnist Becket Adams, who argued in a piece on Thursday that Biden and other Democrats “are unintentionally doing more to promote the Second Amendment than even the most ardent gun-rights group.”
The “blood of patriots,” F-15s, and nukes
As Adams noted, Biden, at one point during his speech, attempted to invoke a famous Thomas Jefferson quote, stating, “Those who say the blood of lib- — ‘the blood of patriots,’ you know, and all the stuff about how we’re going to have to move against the government.”
“Well, the tree of liberty is not watered with the blood of patriots,” the president continued. “What’s happened is that there have never been — if you wanted or if you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons.”
Adams added that it was not the first time that Biden has dismissed any suggestions that an armed citizenry could hold the U.S. government in check if the need would arise.
Biden declared during a New Hampshire campaign stop in February 2020, “Those who say, ‘The tree of liberty is watered with the blood of patriots’ — a great line.”
Then-candidate Biden added at the time, “Well, guess what: The fact is if you’re going to take on the government, you need an F-15 with Hellfire Missiles. There is no way an AK-47 is going to take care of you.”
Democrats can’t keep their narrative straight
Biden isn’t the only Democratic politician making such claims. In 2018, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) tweeted that any uprising “would be a short war” because the federal government “has nukes” that “are legit.”
Adams dismissed their line of thinking as flawed, saying, “Of all people, Joe Biden, who lived through the Vietnam War, the Soviets’ unsuccessful campaign in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War, should not dismiss so casually the idea of an armed insurrection rebuffing the world’s most advanced and best-equipped military.”
“Second, anti-gun Democrats need to settle on a coherent message,” Adams continued. “Are AR-15s ‘weapons of war,’ or aren’t they? You can’t argue they’re military-grade weapons, too dangerous to be owned by the average citizen, while also arguing they’re far too weak to compete with actual military weapons.”
What’s more, Adams noted the incongruity between suggesting that people are powerless against the government and Democrats’ insistence that Jan. 6 was somehow an existential threat to the republic.
He went on to highlight how such rhetoric is likely to increase firearm sales, adding that anyone wanting to advocate for an armed populace should show “this clip of the president threatening nuclear war on disobedient civilians.”
