Former President Donald Trump has still not revealed whether or not he will run for the U.S. presidency again in 2024. But, if he does, it appears that he will have some stiff competition in the Republican Party.
Recent reports indicate that Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are virtually tied as the Republicans’ 2024 favorite.
Neck and neck
One of those reports is from Fox News. According to the outlet, a recent 2024 straw poll had DeSantis and Trump the overwhelming favorites.
That straw poll was taken at the recent Western Conservative Summit. There were roughly 500 people in attendance and tens of thousands watching online. All were asked their preferred 2024 candidate.
Out of some 30 choices, which included both Republican and Democratic candidates, DeSantis came out on top with 74 percent of the vote. Behind him was Trump at 71 percent. After that, the next closest Republican was Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at 43 percent.
Another report, suggesting that DeSantis and Trump are leading the way, came recently from Breitbart. This report found that Trump and DeSantis have the same odds to win the 2024 Republican Primary.
The odds were determined by USsportsbonus.com. According to the outlet, both Trump and DeSantis “have 4/1 odds to win be the Republican nominee in 2024 (20% implied probability), making them tied for the favorite position.”
The analysts, though, said that Trump has the better odds to win the actual 2024 presidential election, giving Trump 7/1 odds and DeSantis 12/1 odds.
Things are shaping up
DeSantis has become popular in the Republican Party particularly for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. He has steadfastly refused to take the sort of overbearing steps taken by governors in more liberal states. In general, though, DeSantis’s politics are right in line with Trump’s, which are extremely popular with Republicans at the moment.
Separately, DeSantis and Trump are quite strong. But, many are talking about the possibility of DeSantis and Trump joining forces with perhaps DeSantis running as Trump’s vice president.
It would certainly be a strong ticket. But, there is some way to go before we get to that point.
In the meantime, the question remains as to who will be the Democrats’ 2024 candidate: who will be strong enough to face a Trump or a DeSantis? That answer to that question remains to be seen.
