Iran: “closer than ever” to reinstating Obama’s Iran Nuclear Deal

It appears that America is close to reentering the Iran Nuclear deal of President Barack Obama.

ABC News reports that “progress has been made” in talks to restore that nuclear deal.

Background

It was former President Donald Trump who removed America from the Iran Nuclear deal arguing that it was ineffective. In that deal, which was made by the Obama administration,  Obama agreed to lift economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for Iran agreeing to curtail its nuclear program.

When Trump opted out of the Iran deal, he replaced it with heavy economic sanctions, which appeared effective. Upon taking office, however, President Joe Biden indicated that he would like to return America to the Iran Deal. But, it has not been so easy to do so.

Diplomats from China, Germany, France, Russia, and Britain have been holding negotiations in order to try to find a way to return both American and Iran back to the Iran Nuclear Deal.

The United States has not directly been a part of these negotiations, although it does appear that a U.S. delegation has been able to indirectly talk with Iran.

The latest

On Sunday, these countries met once again in Vienna. It was the end of the sixth round of these talks, and it appears that progress was made.

“We are now closer than ever to an agreement but the distance that exists between us and an agreement remains and bridging it is not an easy job,” said Iran’s top negotiator, Abbas Araqchi. “We will return to Tehran tonight.”

Enrique Mora, the European Union political director who has coordinated the discussions, confirmed, “We have made progress this week, in this sixth round. We are closer to a deal but we are not still there. We are closer than we were one week ago but we are not still there.”

The worry was that the recent election in Iran of Ebrahim Raisi, a hardliner, would upend these discussions. But, this worry now appears to have been unfounded.

Instead, it appears that we are heading in on reentering the Iran Nuclear Deal, which means that, once again, economic sanctions will be lifted on Iran in exchange for Iran curtailing its nuclear problem.

In other words, another failed policy is being resurrected courtesy of Biden.
