Vice President Kamala Harris has never been a particularly charismatic, likeable, or popular politician — hence her dropping out of the 2020 Democratic primary season with minimal support before a single ballot had been cast by Democratic voters.
Undoubtedly to the chagrin of the biased media that works so hard to prop her up, the reality of Harris’ unpopularity has begun to be reflected in job approval and favorability polls, including one that reveals her losing a hypothetical 2024 matchup against former President Donald Trump, Just the News reported.
Ironically, though, the same poll also revealed that a significant majority believe that she will ascend to the Oval Office to replace President Joe Biden prior to the end of his four-year term.
Underwater favorability rating
That data came from a poll of 1,000 likely voters, conducted between May 12-18 by the Republican-aligned polling firm McLaughlin & Associates.
With regard to the respondents’ opinion of Harris, 47% viewed her favorably, and 48% held an unfavorable view. While that might appear to be a fairly even split, the disparity shines through among those who feel strongly one way or the other, as 38% view her “very” unfavorably compared to 27% who hold a “very” favorable view.
Those figures aren’t far from the RealClearPolitics average of polls, which currently pegs Harris’ favorability at 47.7% and unfavorability at 45.3%, for a positive spread of 2.4%. The numbers mark a substantial tightening of the spread compared to the RCP average in recent weeks and months that, based on the inclusion of certain polls heavily biased in her favor, had pushed the spread positively by double digits.
Trump wins in hypothetical 2024 matchup
The pollsters asked about the likelihood of Harris assuming the presidency from Biden prior to his term’s completion, and 64% of respondents believe America will be dealing with a “President Harris” prior to 2024, while 31% believe such a development to be unlikely.
Interestingly, the 64% overall number includes 51% of those who voted for Biden in 2020, 53% of those who approve of Biden, 50% of registered Democrats, and 53% of self-identified liberals.
Given that 64% of voters believe Harris will ascend to the presidency prior to 2024, and in light of the age-related probability that Biden won’t seek a second term even if he completes his first one, the pollsters posed a hypothetical 2024 matchup between Harris and Trump.
Harris would presumably find the results of that particular question disconcerting, as 49% of the respondents chose Trump over the 45% that sided with her.
Future prospects appear dim
To be sure, pollsters Jim McLaughlin and Scott Rasmussen both cautioned Just the News that it remained far too early to issue any sort of binding predictions concerning the outcome or even the specific participants of the 2024 presidential election.
That said, considering how poorly Harris is already faring in terms of her favorability only five months into her tenure in office, it doesn’t bode well for her future career as an elected official, post-2024.
